Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a trademark?
A: A trademark is any word, phrase, symbol, or design, or any combination of words, phrases, symbols, or designs, that identifies and distinguishes the goods or services provided by one party from those provided by others.
Q: How is a trademark different from a copyright or a patent?
A: A copyright protects an original artistic or literary work. A patent protects an invention.
Q: Who needs a license?
A: A license must be obtained for all products that use the University's trademarks, images, or photography. This includes items that will be purchased for internal consumption only.
Q: How can I become licensed?
A: You will need to submit a license application to The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), which administers the application process on behalf of Penn State. To request an application, visit CLC online or contact CLC directly at 770-956-0520.
The Office of Licensing Programs will review all requests for use of University names, marks, and symbols and provide final approval. The University reserves the right to decline to license special products upon review.
Q: What is promotional licensing?
A: Penn State enters into a number of royalty-bearing licensing agreements through which its indicia may be used in association with those of various companies and agencies for mutually beneficial programs.
If you would like to be considered for a promotional license, please e-mail licensing@psu.edu.
Q: How can I identify an officially licensed product?

Q: What are the rules for internal use?
A: Any Penn State student organization, academic department, or administrative unit that wishes to produce merchandise bearing Penn State indicia must use a licensed manufacturer. This limits any potential risk to the University and ensures that sales of any items bearing Penn State indicia generate funds to support campus programs. It also helps protect the University's image and intellectual property rights.
